If you're a traveler, an art lover, or a lifelong learner...

You may know something about the ancient Etruscans. Maybe you've heard they:

Are considered "mysterious"

Spoke a language unique in the world

Were known for their enjoyment of earthly pleasures

But did you know...

The Etruscans aren't so mysterious after all. I'll show you why!

Thanks to modern science and DNA evidence, we have a better idea of where they came from--and what happened to them.

Their art is unique in the world.

There are new and exciting Etruscan discoveries all the time.

What's included
  • Module 1: Who Were the Etruscans?
We begin with who the Etruscans were. What are the different theories about Etruscan origins? Why the strange language and what do we know about it? What does the latest research show about Etruscan beginnings?
  • Module 2: The Roots of Etruscan Art
In the second module, we dive into the roots of Etruscan art. How did the early Etruscans begin to organize themselves on hilltops across the central part of the Italian peninsula? What was distinct about this culture from everyone else, and what made it "Etruscan? How can we begin to recognize the hallmarks of the Etruscan city, including temples and homes? We also look at the jaw-dropping luxury goods that the Etruscans began to make even in this early period, everything from pottery to jewelry and decorated ostrich eggs!
  • Module 3: Etruria at its Height
This lesson takes us into two major divisions of Etruscan society, Cities of the Living and Cities of the Dead. We’ll see how the Etruscans laid the groundwork—literally—for the Romans by developing things like the arch, city walls and gates, temples, water infrastructure, and homes. Next, we’ll glean a lot of information about how the Etruscans lived and what they valued, based on how they prepared themselves for the afterlife. This is where we take a deep dive—so to speak—into Etruscan tombs. We’ll take a close look at what the Etruscans decided to paint on the walls of the places where they planned to spend all eternity, and the luxury objects they felt were important to take with them.
  • Module 4: A Time of Transition
In this module, we take a closer look at what happened when the Romans began to consolidate their power in Etruscan territories; the slow and relentless march of the Roman conquest and its effect on Etruscan art and society; and the enduring legacy of the Etruscans.
  • *Virtual Visits*
I invite you to travel with me virtually to ancient Etruria with events live from Italy! Thanks to a few “inside connections” with my wonderful colleagues, I’ve arranged for us to go behind the scenes of Etruscan sites and museums. Even some that are officially closed are open just for us! How exciting! Inside this course, you’ll find visits like these: Etruscan City Walk, Perugia; Necropolis of Banditaccia, Cerveteri; Tomba del Faggeto; Antiquarium of Corciano; Museum of the Etruscan Academy, Cortona; Archaeological Museum, Perugia; Archaeological Park of Sodo, Cortona; Ara della Regina Temple, Tarquinia; Etruscan Jewelry-Making in Montepulciano; and more!
